error 4 with correct password

Post by Holger »

Hi there, Today I wanted to mount my external hard drive (Sandisk extremely portable SSD 500 GB) and got error 4. The password is correct. In the instructions I read that the volume header can also be defective. Unfortunately, I didn't back up the header before and can't restore it. Is there a way to get the data?

Can the header be repaired? Can the data on the hard drive be cloned to a second working hard drive in order to then decrypt it?

The encryption works liek this: PW encryptd header, header contains master key, disk sectors are encrypted with master key + sector index + some fancy math.
So if the header is gone the data are irrecoverably lost, that is why its important to have a header backup on hand.

Hi!

Is it possible to create a VHD copy of an encrypted (non system) partition, so that it can be mounted later, and access its contents?

Regards, Gabriel
