For those of you that opted to extract the files of the installer to some folder for portable use, there is the point at which you update to a new release.

  1. End all processes of Sandboxie-Plus. (Otherwise, files that are still open might not be replaced properly.)
  2. Create a backup, at best of the whole folder you extracted Sandboxie-Plus initially. The Sandboxie.ini is the most important file, as it contains the configuration of each sandbox and general Sandboxie settings. The Sandboxie-Plus.ini holds settings of Sandman, the default user interface of Sandboxie-Plus. Copy these files to a save location just to be sure.
  3. Download the latest version of Sandboxie-Plus, which is a binary file in form of an executable (like Sandboxie-Plus-x64-v1.XX.X.exe).
  4. This file is the installer, which asks for administrative privileges, but you have the option to select to "Extract all files to a directory for portable use".
  5. Enter or browse to the directory you had extracted Sandboxie-Plus to previously. The installer will append \Sandboxie-Plus, so it would not overwrite files. You have to modify it in order to replace the files of your portable Sandboxie-Plus extraction. Sandboxie.ini and Sandboxie-Plus.ini shall not be replaced.
  6. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to use a non-empty folder. "The folder: <path> already exists. Would you like to install to that folder anyway?" The installer simply doesn't have a different terminology for the portable extraction and call it "install".
  7. The installer will extract the files to the selected folder, it won't ask for confirmation again. You may check if the Sandboxie.ini was preserved.
  8. You may remove the backup files, but it does not hurt to keep them around.

Alternatively, you, may use the installer to extract the files to an empty folder and move the files to your previous extraction, making sure Sandboxie.ini and Sandboxie-Plus.ini won't be replaced.
