Ronen Tzur, from which you most likely had purchased the license, sold the product to Invincea, who got acquired by Sophos. Sophos then gave up the development of Sandboxie and released its sources, handing the development to the community. DavidXanatos forked this code. Everything this code contained is available without some private individual needing to spend money on it. There are features that have been added that can be used without private individuals needing to pay for. Some of the added features require a supporter certificate, which can be purchased, or obtained by contributing to the project.
