Drop Windows 7 Support Yes/No ???

I have devised a set of adaptations to the driver allowing it to be built with VS2022 yet still loaded by windows 7 x64
Win 7 32 bit that's a no go but I am optimistic that 1.16.3 may bring back W7 compatibility.
Now I need to look into the Qt6 issues

I think since 1.15.12 should work well on 7 for the foreseeable future lets see if Firefox drops support in September as announced or if they extend it once more.
Mozilla extends Firefox ESR 115 support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, macOS 10.12 to 10.14 until March 2026

That's good news
so now I just need to get Qt running that is just a bit work but mostly no uncertenities.

Thanks for the hard work on this. I am looking forward to renewing my subscription :)

Erk! Installed 1.16.3 and shortly after got a message Windows has had a critical fault and will log me off in a few seconds. Decided to reboot instead, and everything came back up properly. Sandboxie PLus 1.16.3 is indeed running on Win7 :D

Mozilla again extended Firefox support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

Updates will be delivered through the ESR channel until the end of August 2026. It was previously announced that support would end in February 2026, but in order to ensure our users can continue to browse the web, we will extend support for Firefox for these operating systems for another six months and then re-evaluate.

The good thing is that Mozilla allows users to use a browser that still gets security patches on Windows 7 (and 8, 8.1), what makes it somewhat reasonable to use Windows 7 for daily use. Most things will work, but not everything can be updated. Other browsers have left it behind and game launchers also have dropped support for these OSes.

According to Statcounter, Windows 7 has dropped below 1% in February 2026.

Well I’m using Win7 as main system and I don’t plan to change it anytime soon, because there is simply no true alternative for my needs. Let me share my experience with that.

Browsers are not a problem atm. Even if Mozilla will not extend support, there are many Win7 compatible browsers and forks. For example you can use r3dfox, Supermium, Pale Moon etc. And if you install extended kernel VxKex-NEXT, then you can use even official versions of most modern browsers. With extended kernel you can also use many other software. That’s why it would be really cool if Sandboxie will be compatible with extended kernel, but it seems to be too difficult for the VxKex–NEXT dev.

The only real problem might be hardware drivers for newer hardware. And yes also the games. Win 7 is for sure not good system for gamers. But not everybody play games. For example I don’t play games at all, so I don’t care.

About the stats… Well the question is how accurate are such stats. Many of the remaining Win7 users are power users. They will not be included in such stats often. Because they are blocking it or changing the user agent because of better compatibility. I’ve been also surprised how many people are still using Win7 in China, when I’ve been talking about it with VxKex-NEXT developer.
